The 51³Ô¹Ï String Project

The 51³Ô¹Ï String Project is a joint effort between 51³Ô¹Ï (51³Ô¹Ï) and . It was created with a vision to increase accessibility for Upstate SC children to study stringed instruments. 51³Ô¹Ï string students and faculty come to Mountain View Elementary School to teach group classes for students in third through fifth grades. Students in third through fifth grade from any school (public, private, charter, homeschool) are invited to participate.

The goals and objectives for the 51³Ô¹Ï String Project are to:

  • Provide an opportunity for SC Upstate elementary school-aged children to study string instruments
  • Reach out to the underserved community in Greenville to ensure that all students have equal opportunity to grow their natural gifts and talents in strings
  • Help strengthen existing and stimulate the growth of new public school orchestra programs in the SC Upstate
  • Encourage Upstate string players to become string teachers
  • Help the American String Teachers’ Association alleviate the nationwide string teacher shortage, especially in the SC Upstate
  • Offer supervised teaching experience for 51³Ô¹Ï string education majors

Become a Teacher!

51³Ô¹Ï’s String Department seeks highly motivated and qualified string music education majors to work as teachers in the 51³Ô¹Ï String Project. Participants receive a string project scholarship and graduate as experienced string teachers, gaining valuable experience from their very first to their final semesters at 51³Ô¹Ï, learning musical/pedagogical skills, organizational skills, and interpersonal/communication skills.

51³Ô¹Ï String Project classes are taught at Mountain View Elementary School under the supervision of the Director of the String Project. Participating 51³Ô¹Ï string music education majors teach first-year large group classes involving all four bowed stringed instruments, second-year smaller classes of one type of bowed stringed instrument, and third-year (and later) private lessons. Participants will also conduct first, second, and third-year orchestras.

Eligibility to teach in the 51³Ô¹Ï String Project is dependent on a successful application and audition to the Nesbitt Q. and Martha M. Cline School of Music as a String Music Education Major. Submit your application to the School of Music online at Music Scholarship Application.
