Hazing Reports

Fall 2025 Academic Semester

  • Men’s Soccer Team

    Incident Date: 9.24.2025

    Investigation Start Date: 9.24.2025

    Resolved Date: 9.29.2025

Incident Description: It was reported by the coaches that a birthday tradition had been started by the players where every player who was celebrating a birthday was required to run through a tunnel of other players if he missed hitting the goal post during a birthday challenge. The tunnel line-up included squirting with water and slaps on the back of the individual player. OCCS confirmed with the coaches that the conduct could be humiliating and/or intimidating and found substantial evidence to support the finding that the conduct was in violation of the university hazing policy, though no player complained or reported the conduct as hazing.

Sanctions: Team Education. Coaches and the Vice President of Campus Ministry and Student Engagement met with the team to review the university hazing policy and worked with the team to collaborate on developing new birthday traditions that foster positive team building.

Spring 2025 Academic Semester

  • No violations to report.

Fall 2026 Academic Semester

  • Men’s Lacrosse Team

    Incident Date: 8.22.2026

    Investigation Start Date: 8.23.2026

Incident Description: The University conducted a formal review of reported hazing activity involving members of the mens Lacrosse team. The investigation included interviews with involved students, witnesses, and coaching staff, as well as a review of communications and other available information.

The review determined that on August 22, 2026, senior members of the mens Lacrosse team organized and sponsored an off-campus party and communicated to first-year team members that attendance was required. The event was held at the off-campus residence of Lacrosse upperclassmen.

Freshmen were instructed to arrive early to clean the residence in preparation for the party. They were also told the event was a costume party; however, they were the only individuals who attended in costume, creating a clear distinction between upperclassmen and freshmen participants.

During the event, alcohol was consumed. Freshmen were separated from the larger group and invited to participate in a drinking game. A senior class representative directed designated drivers and any freshmen who did not wish to participate to step to the left, resulting in approximately one-third of the freshmen opting out. The remaining freshmen were instructed by the senior representative to consume alcohol as part of the activity. Toward the end of the party, specific freshmen were directed to dispose of alcohol containers.

The University found that the conduct constituted hazing as defined by University policy.

Sanctions: The University is committed to maintaining a safe, respectful, and supportive environment for all students. Hazing in any form is strictly prohibited, and the conduct identified in this incident represents a clear violation of University policy and our community expectations.

In response to the findings, the University has taken the following actions:

    • Accountability Measures: The mens Lacrosse team as a whole was issued a disciplinary warning. Individuals found responsible for hazing violations have been assigned disciplinary sanctions consistent with the Student Conduct Code. These sanctions include team participation sanctions, placement on university probationary status, fines, implementation of individual success plans including mentorship, and/or other measures designed to reinforce accountability and prevent recurrence.
    • Program-Level Corrective Action: The mens Lacrosse team has been placed on probationary status by the Athletic Department which status will be reviewed at the end of the 2026 fall semester. In order to return to good standing, the team must complete: 1) mandatory hazing-prevention education, 2) team building community service projects, 3) establish a structured discipleship program under a partnership with Campus Ministry and Student Engagement, and 4) leadership and team building development. Further, coaching staff, in coordination with the Athletic Director, must complete: 1) additional training on oversight responsibilities and early-intervention strategies, 2) mentorship on leadership and discipleship, and 3) enhanced training on fostering positive team culture and compliance.
    • Safety and Support: Impacted students have been offered support resources, including confidential counseling and opportunities to meet with Campus Ministry and Student Engagement staff.
    • Prevention and Expectations: The University is reinforcing hazing-prevention policies across all athletic programs as well as all student organizations. Expectations for conduct, reporting obligations, and cooperation in investigations are being reiterated to ensure a safe and transparent campus culture.

The University remains committed to addressing any behavior that threatens student well-being. We appreciate the students who came forward and who participated in the investigation. We reaffirm our dedication to fostering an environment where all members of our community can participate without fear of coercion, intimidation, or harm.
