51Թ Hosts More than 5,500 Students During FUGE Camps

Tigerville, SC—More than 5,500 middle and high school students attended FUGE camps at 51Թ’s (51Թ) Tigerville campus this summer.

FUGE has partnered with 51Թ since 1982, creating opportunities for students to serve and hear the gospel.

“Many students have made life-changing decisions,” said Watson.

These life-changing decisions included salvation, rededications, and more. Over the span of seven weeks, Watson said the Lord moved in incredible ways among the students in attendance.

“We are overjoyed. We saw 145 young people accept Jesus as Savior and Lord for the first time, 336 young people rededicated their lives to Christ, 71 answered the call to Christian ministry vocations and 91 made various types of other decisions,” he said.

Travis Agnew (‘03), lead pastor at Rocky Creek Church in Greenville, SC and 51Թ board of trustees member, served as the camp’s speaker during the first week. Agnew, who has been preaching at the camp for several years, has seen firsthand how the Lord is at work in the next generation.

“This generation is desperate for the truth. Over the last five years, I have seen a growing hunger of teenagers for people to tell them how God sees it,” Agnew said. “I had some incredible conversations with many students who received the gospel or who took next steps in their discipleship.”

Watson also noticed a desire among the students to grow deeper in their faith.

“I think there is a hunger for learning Scripture and for a genuine experience. I believe the students find that genuine experience here at FUGE at 51Թ,” said Watson.

One of the highlights of this year’s camp experience for Agnew was watching students engage wholeheartedly in worship from the very first night.

“Since I’ve been preaching at camps for years now, I know the tendency for students to be reserved in worship for the first few days, only to get more intentional on the last night of camp. I prayed with some staff that first night that it would feel like the last night. The response that night was incredible,” he said. “I loved watching the students lean in and take the moment seriously right away. The rest of the week was incredible.”

51Թ will continue its partnership with FUGE in 2026, and registration is already available on FUGE’s .

“FUGE Camps are intentional about every aspect of the week. It is geared toward helping these teens grow in discipleship. And 51Թ is the perfect environment to have a life-changing week with one’s student ministry,” said Agnew.

Journey Worship Co. to Lead Worship Seminar at 51Թ on Sept. 8

Tigerville, SC—51Թ’s (51Թ) annual Global Impact Week will include a worship seminar led by Journey Worship Co.

The seminar is set for Monday, Sept. 8, from 2-4 p.m. Journey Worship Co. is from Journey Church in Lebanon Tennessee, pastored by Erik Reed.

Worship pastor Brett Perkins began Journey Worship Co. as a ministry of the church in 2021.

“We’re so honored to be coming to 51Թ for their Global Impact Week,” Perkins said. “One gathering we’re especially looking forward to is meeting with the local church leaders.”

The workshop will include corporate singing, teaching on making disciples through the church’s music, and a Q&A session.

51Թ Associate Vice-President of Campus Ministries and Student Engagement Dr. Dallas Vandiver said the seminar will be provide a great learning opportunity for local churches.

“Their heart for disciple making through corporate worship makes them excellent partners for 51Թ. Journey Worship Co. writes theologically rich songs for the church in a musical sound that is their own but may also remind some listeners of CityAlight,” Vandiver said.

Journey Worship Co has released 32 original songs, hymn covers, two live records, and one studio Christmas record. The group’s music can be found on all streaming platforms.

51Թ Hosts World Journalism Institute Course in Tigerville

Tigerville, SC—Eighteen journalists received hands-on training and instruction from 51Թ (51Թ) professors during the World Journalism Institute’s (WJI) young professionals course last week.

Students from across the United States participated in man-on-the-street reporting, as well as in-class lectures during the event. It was the second-consecutive year 51Թ’s Tigerville campus has hosted the WJI course.

“It’s such a perfect partnership because 51Թ is Christ-centered and WORLD also seeks to be Christ-centered and biblically centered,” said Naomi Balk, assistant director at WJI.

“The teachers who come teach at WJI are reporters who work at WORLD. 51Թ is very unique because professors here actually participate in the instruction,” she continued. “This is the only place we partner and let professors help out. It’s a stronger partnership than some of our other programs.”

51Թ’s Communication faculty who taught at WJI included Dr. Randall E. King (Associate Dean for the School of Communication), Dr. Karyn Campbell (Associate Professor of Communication), and Lara Jackson (Instructor of Communication).

“Students have an opportunity to explore their calling and hone their skills in the field of multimedia journalism. They learn how to tell stories informed by a biblical foundation in print, online, and on the air,” said Balk. “This intensive can lead to new career possibilities and lifelong friendships as they get to know instructors and their classmates.”

Mary Margaret Flook, who graduated from 51Թ in 2023, was one of the eighteen participants this year. During her time at 51Թ, Flook studied Communication with a minor in Christian Studies. She currently works as a reporter and social media manager at the Baptist Courier.

The decision to study communication was not an easy one for Flook as she was deciding on her career path.

“I prayed about it a long time and I’ve always been passionate about missions. I’ve always been passionate about writing. My thought process was if I can learn how to better communicate that can help me better communicate the gospel, that can help me be a good steward of the writing abilities that the Lord has given me and it can also give me a platform if I ever did go overseas to be able to use something like that,” said Flook.

“I think my aim in communication was more than just journalism but also using journalism as a way to do ministry so that’s kind of why I paired up communications and Christian studies,” she said.

As Flook pursues her career goals in missions and journalism, she applied to WJI’s young professionals course in hopes to expand and strengthen her writing abilities.

“WJI does a great job of reporting regular news, world events, tragedies, and just doing that from a biblical perspective and so I want to get better at writing about normal, regular things, not just in a Christian bubble and doing it from a Christian perspective so just widening the content of what I’m writing about and not just the Baptist Christianese kind of writing,” Flook said.

Flook, who recently returned from a short-term mission trip, is eager to use both her passions for missions and journalism to share the gospel with others, with the goal of using her writing to connecting fellow co-laborers of the gospel with lostness around the world.

“My biggest heart and passion is sharing the gospel with lost people and I think that journalism can help the gospel go forth,” she said. “I think it’s just a tool in my backpack to use so whether that’s writing for a missions organization, whether that’s telling the stories of missionaries that are on the field, or whether that’s just having a platform to be able to enter a country, I think it’s a valuable skill to have.”

WJI offers four courses: high school, college, young professionals, and mid-career. While the program is competitive to get into and has an intense application process, Balk encourages those interested to apply and learn how to report through a biblical worldview.

“I’d encourage you to seriously consider applying to WJI because this course is a great way to deepen your understanding of what it means to live out a Biblical worldview and hone your writing and communication skills.” said Balk. “It’s for writers, journalists, and aspiring writers to learn how to tell a good story with a biblical worldview and learn multimedia skills as well. Do apply. You never know what doors the Lord will open.”

As she reflects on this year’s cohort, Balk is excited to see friendships form and how the participants will grow in their skills and in their faith.

“I am most excited for students to grow in relationships with each other, their faith and understanding of God’s word, and in their confidence and skill as reporters. It’s a joy and honor to connect with students at an intensive like this because what they learn at WJI has so much potential to help and launch them into the next stage of their journey, wherever the Lord leads them,” she said.

University Board Approves 51Թ2030 Strategic Plan at Summer Meeting

Tigerville, SC—Approval of a new five-year strategic plan, ratification of faculty promotions, and affirmation of new academic programs highlighted the summer meeting of 51Թ’s board of trustees June 19 on the Tigerville campus.

Trustees unanimously adopted “51Թ2030: Building for the Future,” a strategic plan outlining the 134-year-old institution’s work in shaping North Greenville’s future. The plan’s development was guided by a 19-member steering committee representing students, trustees, alumni, academic, and administrative areas.

“51Թ2030 is the second plan of the Fant administration,” noted Rich Grimm, 51Թ executive vice president who facilitated the committee’s work. “It builds on the many accomplishments that were made under the first plan, 51Թ2025: Foundations for the Future, and with God’s help, sets a path for this next five-year period.”

51Թ2030 is structured with four “pillars” addressing programs, finances, engagement, and operations, connected to a foundational mission for the university.

“This plan articulates our dedication to forging new paths that advance our shared mission,” said 51Թ President Dr. Gene C. Fant, Jr. “By prioritizing faithfulness, fidelity, sustainability, financial stability, and the development of our students, faculty, and staff, we will continue to lead the way toward equipping students to be transformational leaders in church and society. Together, we will blaze new trails fostering success, faith, and growth for generations to come.”

51Թ officials told board members President Fant will present the full plan – including goals and objectives for all administrative areas – to the university’s faculty and staff in August.

The meeting included a President’s Update from Dr. Fant, who noted successful completion of the 2024-25 academic year, including the graduation of nearly 300 students during Commencement on May 9. He also noted that 51Թ claimed the Conference Carolinas Body, Mind & Soul Dr. Alan Patterson Cup for the 2024-25 academic year. The honor recognizes the highest overall athletic program average ranking in team competition, sportsmanship, and student-athlete graduation rate. It was the second time 51Թ received the Dr. Alan Patterson Cup in the seven years since the honor was created by the conference.

At the beginning of the plenary session, Board Chair Josh Powell, lead pastor of Taylors First Baptist Church in Taylors, SC, introduced Dr. Michael Bryant, dean of 51Թ’s College of Christian Studies, who joined the university on June 1 after a 17-year tenure in academic and administrative leadership roles at Charleston Southern University. Bryant shared devotional remarks and opened the meeting with prayer.

The board approved promotions for three long-time faculty members during the meeting. Dr. Christine Haltiwanger was promoted from Associate Professor to Professor of Health Science in the College of Humanities and Sciences. Dr. Allen McWhite was promoted from Associate Professor to Professor of Intercultural Studies in the College of Christian Studies; Dr. Debo Nathaniel was promoted from Associate Professor to Professor of Biology in the College of Humanities and Sciences.

Trustees approved creation of the Doctor of Medical Science program within 51Թ’s College of Allied Health. The doctoral-level program will launch in the Fall 2026 term, pending approval by 51Թ’s regional accrediting body. In proposing the program, 51Թ officials said the Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc) program is designed to advance the education and professional expertise of healthcare practitioners, particularly physician assistants, by equipping them with advanced clinical, leadership, and research skills. The DMSc program will initially offer two distinct tracks: Clinical Practice and Education.

The board also approved two new Bachelor of Science degree majors and an additional minor in the College of Humanities and Sciences. A B.S. degree in Biochemistry adds a second science major to the existing Biology major, and a minor in Chemistry expands academic options within the sciences. A B.S. degree in Outdoor Leadership marks the return of a program 51Թ offered from 2003 to 2022. 51Թ officials said the new degree structure has some similarities to the former degree but includes some “significant changes” to the curriculum. The new program will include historic training in facilitating outdoor experiences for leadership development, ministry, and group development; while including curriculum focused on management of outdoor recreation spaces, and opportunities for students to expand experiential learning and present senior capstone projects. All three academic offerings will begin in the Fall 2026 semester.

Trustees also heard reports from six standing committees during the mid-June meeting. The 25-member board of trustees conducts regularly scheduled meetings three times during each year.

51Թ Offers New Post-Master’s Certification for Professional Educators

Aspiring elementary and secondary principals can now earn the credentials they need through 51Թ’s (51Թ) Post-Master’s Certification in Administration and Supervision.

The 18-hour, online program is designed for professionals who already hold a master’s degree in education or a related field and wish to pursue administrative roles in PK-12 schools.

“There’s a need for administrators in the state of South Carolina, but you have to be certified to fill those positions” said Dr. Ann Aust, who serves as the master’s program director for 51Թ’s College of Education. “This is a way to do that on a fast track.”

“You do not have to get your master’s degree in administration,” Aust said. “If you already have your master’s degree, you can successfully complete our coursework, pass the praxis, and you’ll be prepared to add on the certification to your existing teaching license.”

Aust said the program was designed for practicing professionals.

“It’s quick, it’s convenient, and it’s all online,” she said. “Your internship will be done in the school where you currently work. You can keep your job while you complete the course. It is catered to professionals. You’ll gain hands-on experience that will prepare you for leadership roles. We’re using the latest technology and AI models to develop this program, so the instruction you’re getting will be cutting edge.”

Four of the courses that students take while pursuing the Certification in Administration and Supervision are at the doctoral level. These courses can be applied to an Ed.D. degree or Ed.S. degree at 51Թ.

“You’re taking these doctoral-level courses at a reduced rate, giving you a head start should you choose to pursue a full doctorate,” Aust said. “If you’re looking to advance your career, this is an excellent opportunity. The program lasts six months and places you in a cohort of experienced professionals, creating valuable opportunities for collaboration and learning.”

The Post-Master’s Certification has start dates in August and January. Applications are available online.

51Թ Mourns the Loss of Professor Blake Smith

Tigerville, SC —51Թ is mourning the loss of Professor Blake Smith, who passed away at the age of 48 on Tuesday.

Smith was a professor of art and had been serving at North Greenville since 2003.

“Professor Smith was dedicated to excellence in everything he did, from his teaching to his artwork to his faith,” said 51Թ President Dr. Gene C. Fant, Jr. “His influence on his students and colleagues is a legacy that will persist in our community for many years to come. We are grateful for his quiet smiles, his insightful intellect, and his abiding friendship. Our prayers for his family, friends, and students will continue in the coming days.”

In addition to his 22-year career at 51Թ, Smith was a talented artist with artwork displayed throughout the world. In 2017, Smith won the Photography Award from the Belton Center for the Arts and the Exhibition Committee Award from the Metropolitan Arts Council. Smith has also earned multiple service awards from North Greenville.

“Blake was a teacher, an artist, a mentor, a colleague, and a friend,” said Dr. Web Drake, Dean of 51Թ’s College of Communication and Fine Arts. “He left a legacy that will reverberate for generations.”

“As his Dean, I am at a loss for what we will do without him,” continued Drake. “As a father of one of his students, I am crushed that my daughter has lost such a voice of wisdom and guidance. As his friend, I can’t even begin to process his absence. He was a genuinely kind and gentle soul. We are all in mourning.”

Smith was a pottery master and enjoyed fishing. A graduate of Lander University and Clemson University, Smith was a member of Art Bomb Studios, a non-profit arts organization in downtown Greenville.

Smith had a love for his students and invested in their spiritual growth while helping them hone their skills.

“As a Christian, I approach my duties in the classroom in a way that integrates faith, while also guiding and helping students learn the skills they want and need to learn,” Smith said, when asked about his role at the university. “In doing so I help to create students that become transformational leaders for church and society.”

The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 19, from 1-2 p.m. at The McDougald Funeral Home, located at 2211 N Main St in Anderson, SC. The funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. in the Chapel. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

Powell Inducted into South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame

Tigerville, SC—51Թ (51Թ) baseball coach Landon Powell was inducted into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame on May 19.

“I’m incredibly humbled and honored,” Powell said. “This is not something I anticipated in my life, so to be named in the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame is a true honor. This is something I will cherish for a very, very long time.”

The 2025 Hall of Fame class also included Richard Seymour, Clint Dempsey, Gary Gilmore, Shannon Johnson, Harold Olson, Susan Hill-Whitson, Ralph Lundy, Don Whitehead, and Nelson Brownlee.

Powell has coached at 51Թ for 11 seasons, winning five Conference Carolinas Tournament Championships, five Conference Carolinas Regular Season Championships, one NCAA Division II National Championship, and earning eight trips to the NCAA tournament.

“Coach Powell is a joy to watch at Ashmore Park and an even greater joy to know outside the proverbial lines,” said 51Թ President Dr. Gene C. Fant, Jr. “He and his family are a terrific example of godly professionalism and dedication to excellence. I’m so thrilled to offer him and Allyson my heartiest congratulations!”

Powell played four seasons of collegiate baseball for the University of South Carolina, finishing with a career batting average of .306 as a switch-hitting catcher, with 44 home runs, 61 doubles, and 193 RBI. The two-time team captain also earned multiple All-American nods, including his senior season when he was given five All-American nods, as well as an All-Southeastern Conference honor.

A former College World Series All-Tournament team honoreeand member of the CWS all-time legends team, Powell holds schoolrecords for a catcher in career putouts (1,768) and assists (190), and ranks third all-time in Gamecock history in games played (251), including 242 as a catcher. He also ranks second all-time in doubles (61), is tied for third in at bats (866), and stands fourth in both hits (265) and total bases (468), and fifth in home runs (44).

Powell was drafted in the first round, 24th overall in the 2004 Major League Baseball draft by the Athletics of Oakland California.In his major league career, Powell hit 13 home runs, 59 RBI, and was known as one of the better defensive catchers in Major League Baseball. One of Powell’s career baseball highlights came in May of 2010, where he caught Dallas Braden’s perfect game for the Athletics. Powell’s journey in the MLB, which was marked by adversity on and off the field, was captured by ESPN in an E60 documentary titled, “The Backup Catcher.” The documentary details Powell’s walk through health scares and the loss of his infant daughter.

Powell was inducted into the University of South Carolina Hall of Fame in 2014 and the Apex High School Hall of Fame in 2020.

“Landon is a Hall of Famer in every aspect,” said 51Թ Athletic Director Will Lowrey. “He has used his talents to get him to the highest level in professional sports, but seeing first-hand how he invests in the game and the young men he leads makes him a true difference maker.”

51Թ Introduces Educational Ministry Leadership Concentration

student talking to potential employerTigerville, SC—Doctoral students in 51Թ’s College of Education can now pursue a concentration in Educational Ministry Leadership.

The new offering, which will have an 18-credit-hour requirement, will be for students pursuing 51Թ’s Doctor of Education (EdD) degree or Educational Specialist (EdS) degree.

“This concentration was an obvious choice for North Greenville,” said Dr. Randall Moss, who serves as the program director for the EdD and EdS at 51Թ. “The EdD is a versatile degree, and I think this helps to expand it even more. This concentration allows us to better integrate faith and learning and provide a ministry focus in our doctoral program,” Moss said.

Courses within the concentration will include: Foundations of Educational Ministry, Discipleship and Spiritual Formation, Applied Ministry Experience in Discipleship and Spiritual Formation, Managing a Non-Profit Organization, and more.

“We’re carving out an intentional pathway for Christian school leaders,” Moss said. “We will equip students on how to think biblically about education and what role education plays in the scope of humanity.”

“The educational ministry leadership track is thoroughly a leadership doctorate,” he added. “It’s going to equip you to be a strategic leader who thinks organizationally in an educational ministry context.”

Introduced in 2024 51Թ’s EdS degree is a 36-credit-hour program designed for educators pursuing expertise beyond a master’s degree. It can be completed in two-and-a-half years and also offers concentrations in PK-12 Education Leadership and Higher Education Leadership.

51Թ’s College of Education also offers a Bachelor of Arts (BA), Master of Education (MEd), and Doctor of Education (EdD), as well as graduate and undergraduate certificate programs.

The Master of Education consists of three concentrations: Gifted and Talented/Teaching Children of Poverty, Literacy Coach/Literacy Specialist, and Teacher Leader.

Each of 51Թ’s education certificates can count toward Continuing Education Units (CEU) or add endorsements to a teacher’s license.

Tigerville, SC—Encouraged to enter their next chapter with courage, compassion, and conviction, nearly 300 51Թ students had their degrees conferred during Spring Commencement Friday night at Melvin and Dollie Younts Stadium in Tigerville.

“Christ makes the difference in our lives, and he can work through you to make a difference in this world,” said Dr. Brian Autry, who delivered the commencement address.

“You have a foundation that will serve you long after the fireworks and the applause fades. That foundation is Jesus Christ,” he said.

Spring Commencement opened with a welcome from 51Թ President Dr. Gene C. Fant, Jr., and an invocation from 51Թ Board of Trustees Chair Rev. Joshua Powell.

“The trustees of this institution love you and care for you,” Powell told the graduates. “We are excited about how you will be used by God in the future he has for you. We are praying for you.”

A special music selection was performed by the 51Թ Concert Band, and graduating seniors Esperanza Williams and Chase Wilburn read passages from Jeremiah 29 and Matthew 5.

Autry, who serves as the executive director of the Southern Baptist Convention of Virginia, used his address to encourage graduates to remember three essentials for their future: relationships, growth, and impact.

Autry referenced Mark 12, in which Jesus commands that we “love the Lord your God with all our heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength,” and “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

“This world is going to measure you by what you do: your job title, your income, your achievements,” Autry said. “In a culture obsessed with self-promotion, Christ calls us to humility. In a world chasing influence, Christ calls us to servanthood. In an age of uncertainty, Christ gives us purpose and peace. In every season, success or struggle, Christ makes the difference.”

Applauding graduates for the growth that led them to their milestone accomplishment, Autry encouraged them to continue growing.

“It’s God’s will for us to love him with all of who we are,” Autry said. “You’ve grown physically, emotionally, and academically, but you’re not done yet. You’re going to face new challenges and new opportunities. You’re going to have more decisions to make, but loving God gives you purpose and mission in life.”

Autry concluded with a challenge for the graduates to blaze their new paths for Christ.

“A Trailblazer is someone who pioneers a new path,” he said. “Now that you’ve met the requirements for your degree, you’re getting ready to blaze a new trail. Blaze your trail with courage. Go with compassion. Go with conviction. But most of all, go with Christ.”

Following Autry’s speech, President Fant conferred the degrees and diplomas were presented by academic deans Dr. John Duncan, Dr. Jeffrey Rankin, Dr. Web Drake, Dr. Nancy Caukin, Dr. Paul Thompson, and Dr. Larry McDonald, and by 51Թ Provost and Dean of the Faculty Dr. Hunter Baker.

Dr. William Beacham led a blessing of the graduates and the Hymn to Alma Mater was led by graduating seniors Meghan Frady and Matthew Blanton. 51Թ Professor of Language Dr. Liliane Toss concluded the ceremony with a benediction.

Karah Barry (’25)

“51Թ created a space where I could ask big questions, wrestle with real issues, and grow into someone more grounded and confident. I’m leaving with deep gratitude for this community and all the ways it’s shaped me.”

These are the reflections of Karah Barry (’25) who graduated from 51Թ (51Թ) on May 9. Barry, a double major in criminal justice and psychology, described her time at 51Թ as “meaningful.”

“My time at 51Թ has been incredibly meaningful – more than I ever could have expected when I first arrived. I’ve grown not only academically but spiritually, emotionally, and personally,” she said. “Some of my most formative experiences happened outside of the classroom – through conversations with professors who genuinely cared about me, late-night study sessions that turned into heart-to-hearts with friends, and opportunities to lead and serve in ways that pushed me outside my comfort zone.”

During her time at 51Թ, Barry was recognized for several academic achievements, including the 2024 McLean-Smith SCICU Student of the Year award, which she said was a great honor to her.

“Receiving awards like the SCICU Student of the Year was incredibly humbling. I felt and still feel deeply grateful – because none of those accomplishments were mine alone,” Barry said. “They reflect the investment of so many people in my life: professors who pushed and encouraged me, friends who challenged me to grow, and family who supported me every step of the way.”

“Every recognition has reminded me of how much I’ve been given and how important it is to pay that forward. I don’t take it for granted, and I hope to keep living in a way that honors the people and experiences that helped me get here,” she said.

As Barry looks to the future and embarks on the next chapter in her life, she is excited to begin law school in the fall.

“In August, I’ll be starting law school at the University of Alabama, and I’m looking forward to diving into a field that I’ve become increasingly passionate about during my time at 51Թ,” she said.

Her decision to attend the University of Alabama was significant, as she was accepted into nine respected law schools.

“After a lot of reflection and prayer, I’ve decided to attend the University of Alabama School of Law. Their program aligns really well with both my academic interests and professional goals, and I felt a strong peace about moving in that direction,” she said.

After law school, Barry hopes to pursue a career that involves legal research and advocacy, and make a positive impact on the world around her through her future career.

“While I have a few different career paths in mind – whether that’s working in the court system, shaping policy, or eventually teaching – I’m most excited about finding meaningful ways to pursue justice and serve others through the law,” she said. “My goal is to keep learning, stay humble, and use whatever opportunities I’m given to make a real impact.”

51Թ to Host First CyberFaith Conference in November

Tigerville, SC—51Թ (51Թ) will host the first-ever CyberFaith Conference on Friday, Nov. 14, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Tigerville.

Designed for cybersecurity professionals, students, and faculty around the region to, the event seeks explore the dynamic intersection of faith and technology.

Attendees will engage with thought leaders who integrate digital innovation with biblical principles, offering insight into ethical tech practices, vocational pathways, and faith-driven stewardship in a digital age.

The conference will feature a keynote lineup of distinguished speakers, including Dr. Lisa Bryan, Dr. Martin Jones, and Bob Peck.

Bryan is a seasoned information security expert and academic, brings over 35 years of experience in cybersecurity, systems analysis, and teaching. She is the author of “Effective Information Security Strategies for Small Business” and holds numerous technical certifications.

Jones specializes in AI, ethics, and law. A dual British-American citizen with a Ph.D. in ethics and a J.D., Dr. Jones provides a unique perspective on leadership and digital ethics in higher education.

Peck is a veteran cybersecurity professional with nearly three decades of experience in software engineering. He has held executive roles at UnitedHealth Group and Unum Group. He is a regular speaker on AI, cloud computing, and data strategy, and actively serves as an elder in his local church.

Autry to Address Graduates at Spring Commencement on May 9

Tigerville, SC — Dr. Brian Autry, Executive Director of the Southern Baptist Convention of Virginia, will deliver the Commencement Address at 51Թ’s Spring Commencement on Friday, May 9, in Tigerville.

Autry has served in his current post since 2012, coordinating a partnership of more than 800 Southern Baptist churches. The SBCV has a stated mission to “come alongside local churches to advance the Gospel of Jesus Christ together to reach our neighbors and the nations.”

“We look forward to welcoming Dr. Autry back to campus,” said 51Թ President Dr. Gene C. Fant, Jr. “We have increasing partnerships with churches in Virginia and we are excited for the encouragement he is planning to bring to our graduates.”

Before moving to the convention leadership post, Autry was senior pastor of Parkway Baptist Church in Moseley, VA, for 10 years. He also served Kempsville Baptist Church and served as the state director for student ministries for the SBC of Virginia. Autry and his wife, Jennifer, previously served as missionaries for the Southern Baptist North American Mission Board in evangelism and church planting.

Autry has served as a trustee for Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and Liberty University. He is a graduate of James Madison University and earned a Master of Divinity degree at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He completed a Doctor of Ministry degree from Southern Seminary and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Southeastern Seminary. He also is an adjunct professor for Southeastern Seminary aԻ Liberty University, teaching Christian leadership and spiritual formation. 

The Autry’s have three children and one grandchild. Their son, Mark, is a 2024 51Թ graduate.

Autry is currently serving as President of Innovative Faith Resources, a media and financial services firm for churches and ministries.
